Recruiting Timing

Time Big Four Outreach to Beat App Deadlines

A great alum reply is worthless if the req already closed. The honest fix is to work backward from each firm's deadline and reach out early enough that a referral can actually be filed.

A plain LinkedIn search buries the people who would actually help you.

It ranks by prominence, so the most-followed, most-messaged names sit on top. FindWarmIntros surfaces the coworkers who share your school or a past employer - the people most likely to reply - and hands you a ready-to-send intro.

See who can refer you in - pick a the Big Four target:

Short answer: Big Four postings often fill on a rolling basis and close weeks before the stated date, so message alumni 2 to 3 weeks before you plan to apply, not after. Send your intro when the recruiting cycle opens (late summer for full-time, early fall for internships) so the alum has time to notice the email, reply, and submit the referral through the internal portal before the req disappears.

Why the timing matters more than the message

A referral at Deloitte, KPMG, PwC or EY is only useful while the requisition is open. These firms recruit on a rolling basis and pull popular postings early once they hit an applicant target, so the real deadline is often two to four weeks ahead of the one printed on the job page.

Most candidates send the perfect note the night before the deadline. By then the alum needs a day or two to reply, and the internal referral form itself takes a few minutes they may not have. Give the whole chain room to breathe and you convert a friendly reply into a filed referral instead of a missed one.

When to reach out, by cycle

Anchor every message to where the firm is in its calendar, not to when you happened to update your resume.

  • Full-time and experienced roles. Openings appear steadily but close fast. Message the alum 2 to 3 weeks before you apply, and name the specific req so they can act while it is live.
  • Summer internships. Applications open in late summer and early fall and many close by October. Reach out in August or the first days of September, before the alum is buried in their own busy season.
  • Leadership and diversity programs. These have hard, early deadlines and small cohorts. Treat the posted date as your submit-by date and start alumni outreach a full month ahead.
  • Off-cycle and audit busy season. From January through April your alum is slammed. Keep the ask to 30 seconds and one specific link, or wait until May when they can breathe.

Find the right alumni before the window closes

The slow part is not writing the note, it is figuring out who at the firm actually shares your school or a past employer and is senior enough to refer. Doing that by hand across four firms eats the days you needed for the referral itself.

FindWarmIntros does the finding-and-ranking part: it surfaces the real people at Deloitte, KPMG, PwC or EY you already share something with, ranks them by how likely they are to help, and drafts a warm intro that leads with the shared thread. You spend your remaining time on the conversation, not the search, so the referral lands while the req is still open.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early is too early to message an alum?
Two to three weeks before the deadline is the sweet spot. Much earlier and the req may not be posted yet, so the alum has nothing concrete to refer you to. Once the posting is live, move quickly.
What if the deadline is tomorrow?
Send a short, specific note now and say plainly that the posting closes soon. Include the exact req link and offer to send your resume immediately so the alum can file the referral in one sitting.
Do referrals still count if I already applied?
Often yes at Big Four firms, if the alum submits the referral while your application is still in review. Tell them you have applied and paste the req or job ID so they can attach the referral to your existing profile.
Should I message alumni at all four firms at once?
Yes, but tailor each note to that firm's calendar and the specific role. A generic blast reads as spray-and-pray, while a message that names the firm's open req and your shared school reads as a real, timed request.
